Writing About Two Works of Art Compare and Contrast
Write a ii-to-three-page (500-800 words) essay that describes and analyzes a pair of paintings on a similar subject matter.
Choose ONE of the following pairs of paintings to analyze:
- Family unit Portrait by Rembrandt & Family unit Group by William Glackens
- The Showtime Steps past Marguerite Gérard & First Steps by Vincent van Gogh
- Paris, A Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte & Rainy Day on 5th Avenue by Childe Hassam.
Depict the 2 paintings in detail so that your readers can easily visualize them without really seeing them. Explain how the perspective, technique, and compositional features of each painting aid create contrasting rhetorical furnishings. In your analysis, focus on two or three specific points of contrast. Back up your assay by referring to specific details from each painting.

Your assay should present both your own observations and library inquiry. The essay must include at least FOUR sources documented in proper MLA format, with in-text, parenthetical references and a listing of Works Cited. Two of your sources will be principal sources–the ii paintings you clarify–and two will be secondary sources–historical or disquisitional commentary relevant to the paintings. (Delight note: encyclopedias–including on-line encyclopedias like Wikipedia–do not count every bit sources for this consignment.)
Give your essay a thesis and a clear, logical organisation. Your first paragraph should start with a potent lead, provide any necessary background data, and end with a clear thesis statement.
